Play Synopsis:
To mark the 40th anniversary of the frontier’s reopening in 2025, In the Still of the Night stands as a timely and vital tribute to a generation that found strength and endured the decades-long closure of the land border with Spain.
In the Still of the Night offers a glimpse into Gibraltarian life during the closed frontier era. Set against the backdrop of the 15th Siege of Gibraltar in the 20th century - not one of cannons and ships, but of borders and bureaucracy - the play delves into themes of identity, resilience, community, family, and the meaning of ‘home’.
This new work is the final chapter in the acclaimed Llanito historical trilogy, which began with 2015’s Llévame Donde Nací, chronicling the struggles of the Gibraltarian evacuees, and continued in 2018 with Winds of Change, exploring the pivotal events surrounding the 1967 Referendum.
Now, In the Still of the Night turns its focus to the years between 1967 and the full reopening of the frontier in 1985, illuminating the human stories behind headlines, the humour, music, and language that carried a people through uncertainty.
