Education in Gibraltar

Gibraltar follows the English education system, offering state and private schools, a college, and its own university since 2015. Education is compulsory and free for eligible residents, with nursery places available at all Lower Primary Schools and St Martin's School. Additionally, registered private nurseries and playgroups meet regulatory standards.

Primary education is free, co-educational, and follows the English National Curriculum with local adaptations, such as Spanish and Religious Education. Formal schooling begins in the Reception year, starting with morning sessions that progress to full days.

Secondary education, also free and compulsory for ages 12–15, includes core subjects like English, Mathematics, and Science, alongside Spanish, History, Geography, Art, Music, and Physical Education. In Years 10–11, students choose optional subjects, with vocational options available.

For children with special needs, St Martin’s School provides education for ages 2–16, while several primary and secondary schools have Learning Support Facilities (LSFs) for students who require additional assistance. Alternative Learning Centres also support students with social, emotional, or behavioral needs.

Gibraltar College offers full-time courses in IT, business, finance, and the built environment, along with academic and vocational qualifications like GCSEs and A-levels. Part-time evening courses cater to a broad range of learners.

The University of Gibraltar, established in 2015, grants degrees and professional qualifications, with disciplines including Business, History, Education, Natural Sciences, and Health & Sport Sciences. The university maintains high academic standards and has received accreditation from the UK's Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). It is also a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Healthcare in Gibraltar

Healthcare in Gibraltar is managed by the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA), which provides residents with access to St Bernard’s Hospital and the Primary Care Centre. Emergency medical treatment is available free of charge for British citizens visiting Gibraltar for up to 30 days with a valid passport. Private healthcare services are widely available, offering general and specialized treatments.

In complex medical cases, patients may be referred to specialists in Spain or the UK. While the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) cover emergency treatment, they do not replace travel insurance, which is recommended for additional coverage, including repatriation.

Gibraltar's education and healthcare systems are well-developed, aligning closely with UK standards. With access to quality schooling and medical care, residents benefit from strong public services in a territory that blends British governance with Mediterranean influences.
