Town Area is home to most of Gibraltar’s retail establishments. Main Street, running through the pedestrianised old town from Casemates Square all the way up to Southport Gates, almost covers the entire length of the city, its buildings exhibiting a blend of Andalusian, Moorish, Portuguese, Genoese, and British architecture. Dating back to the 18th Century, merchants, traders and shopkeepers established their businesses in Gibraltar, many of which are still run by the direct descendants of the families that instituted them. Casemates Square, as with much of Gibraltar, is open to and represented by many different ethnic peoples. Casemates, is the largest of the two main squares located in the city centre of Gibraltar, and is used for special events throughout the year, hosting various shows, festivals and nightlife.
